Employers Adjust to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) Mandates

The strict data privacy laws implemented in the European Union over the last year have significantly affected the way companies around the world approach the use of personal data. While the GDPR is not new, it continues to demand scrutiny from companies on their processes for handling information about their employees, candidates, and contractors. For employers, the central principles driving the GDPR are lawfulness, fairness, and transparency; purpose limitation (how personal data is used); data minimization; accuracy; storage limitation; integrity and confidentiality (security); and accountability.

Clearly, GDPR has implications for the way employers handle candidate and employee data. As companies assess and define operational processes for GDPR compliance, Allegis Global Solutions, (AGS) can add value by sharing new capabilities within technology tools that will help in the effort. Areas that may require a GDPR update for employers include security controls for workforce-related processes, technologies, and solutions; collection of data (minimization); data retention; and Data Subject Access Requests (DSAR).

Takeaway: Employers should consider it a priority to be intentional about how their data is used. They should also establish how key decisions are made over “why” and “how” personal information is processed. AGS can inform the process and help organizations arrive at the most effective strategies for complying with the GDPR as it relates to workforce processes.
