UK: Migration Committee Advises Review of Shortage Occupations List

The Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) has recommended that new roles be added to the UK government’s Shortage Occupations list. The advice was given in advance of a new points-based immigration system that comes into effect in January 2021. The Shortage Occupations list identifies which occupations struggle to attract local talent and can be filled by migrant workers.

MAC suggests the list of medium-skilled roles eligible for employment visas now include occupations such as nursing auxiliary and assistants, pharmacists, senior care workers, bricklayers and masons, butchers, and welders. They also recommend separate lists for Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland to create some flexibility in the system. The lists should be reviewed annually, according to MAC.

Takeaway: If your company employs migrant workers, make sure you keep up-to-date with the latest government announcements on new immigration rules, especially approaching the end of 2020 when details become finalized.
